A holiday in Selangor is filled with non-stop fun, entertainment and adventure. This is one of the most developed states in the country. Selangor is also known as the ‘gateway to Malaysia’ because the main entry points, KLIA and Port Klang, are situated within the state.

Its flourishing urban centres such as Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Sunway and Klang abound with modern facilities, from excellent healthcare institutions, international colleges to huge shopping malls and recreational centres. MASJID SULTAN SALAHUDDIN ABDUL AZIZ SHAH (BLUE MOSQUE)

Shah Alam

Also known as ‘The Blue Mosque’, Masjid Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah is one of the most notable landmarks in the state. Standing 350 feet above ground and measuring 170 feet wide, its distinctive blue dome is said to be the biggest in Southeast Asia. Traditional Malay design elements dominate the mosque’s interior, while intricate Islamic calligraphy decorates its dome and main prayer hall. Visitors are advised to dress modestly and headscarves will be given to female visitors.

FRIM (FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF MALAYSIA)

Kepong

FRIM is one of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research in the world. It was gazetted as a Natural Heritage Site on 10 February 2009 under the National Heritage Act 2005, The 486ha reserve is ideal for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts with herb gardens, shady trees, nature trails, arboretums and a canopy walkway.

SEPANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT

Sepang

Dubbed ‘the Home of Motorsports’, this state-of-the-art circuit used to host the annual Petronas Malaysian F1 Grand Prix. Today, the circuit is still the venue for prestigious events such as Shell Malaysia Motorcyle Grand Prix. Sepang International Circuit is situated near to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

KAMPUNG KUANTAN FIREFLY PARKS

Kuala Selangor

Kampung Kuantan and Kampung Bukit Belimbing in Kuala Selangor are among the few places in the world where one can watch the symphony of lights emitted by firefly colonies. These tiny insects reside on Berembang trees along the riverbank.

KUALA KUBU BHARU

Hulu Selangor

Situated about 50km from Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Kubu Bharu is an eco-adventure destination especially for white water rafting. Kuala Selangor River is a popular choice among rafters looking for a challenging rafting session near to the city. Other attractions include the Sungai Chilling Waterfalls and include hiking at Buku Kutu.

I-CITY

Shah Alam

i-City is a unique destination which features a variety of attractions under one roof. It has been dubbed ‘The City of Glittering Lights’ for its mesmerising nightscape, created by a million LED lights. The highlight here is the 50,000 sq ft SnoWalk, where visitors can experience a simulated Artic environment. Other attractions include a Wax Museum, 6D motion theatre, water park and indoor amusement arcade.

ROYAL KLANG TOWN HERITAGE WALK

Klang

Hailed as the Royal Town of Selangor, Klang is rich in history, traditions and customs. The early settlement here was established at the southern bank of the Klang River, an area known for its tin production as early as the 15th century. Join this heritage walk for a glimpse into its history.

BUKIT MALAWATI (Malawati Hill)

Kuala Selangor

This ancient fort was constructed in the late 18th century during the reign of the second Sultan of Selangor. It later yielded to the Dutch cannons. The site is preserved with the original foundation stones, cannons as well as a fabled execution block. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the coastline from the hill.

SEPANG GOLDCOAST

Sepang

Situated about one hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur, this small coastal town is home to scenic beaches with calm waters. Sepang is also the site of several beachfront resorts, seafood restaurants and cottage industries.

FARM IN THE CITY

Seri Kembangan

Designed after the setting of a Malaysian village, farm and fruit orchard, Farm in the City is the ideal enclave to see and interact with natural plants and wildlife. Visitors will be exposed to the many aspects of farm and animal life and learn the importance of wildlife conservation and preservation. Attractions include a free-flight bird aviary, reptiles cavern and pet village. See nearly 100 species of animals up close including the Giant Tortoise, and view 300 birds from around the world.

FO GUANG SHAN DONG ZEN TEMPLE

Jenjarum

Built in 1994. Dong Zen Temple is a tranquil temple complex spread over 16 acres. In its heart is the Dong Zen School of Buddhism, the cradle for the Malaysian young Buddhists.

EDU-PARK, UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA (UPM)

Serdang

This is an innovative initiative by Universiti Putra Malaysia to provide educational touristic attractions. Visitors can learn about agriculture, science, technology and many more in a fun and interesting way. Attractions include Malay Heritage Museum, Animal Anatomy Museum, Human Anatomy Museum as well as the Dairy and Deer Farm where visitors can experience feeding the animals. There is also the Serdang Gallery which displays creations from local artists. Edu Park@ UPM is suitable for all ages from kids, teenagers, families to adults.

SKY MIRROR

Sasaran Beach, Kuala Selangor

Salar de Uyuni or Sky Mirror is named after the world’s largest salt flat in Bolivia which is known as the World’s Largest Natural Mirror. This amazing sight can also be seen right here in Malaysia at the Sasaran Beach where the expansive stretch of mirror-like sea seems to merge with the sky. The ‘endless horizon effect’ creates a magical backdrop and visitors can take as many photographs as they want from various perspectives. The phenomenon happens during the new moon and full moon, when there is a thin layer of water above a submerged sand bar, creating the illusion of walking above water. Sasaran Beach is located off the coast of a fishing village in Jeram. Boat tours to Sky Mirror is only conducted by tour operators.

Selangor has an abundance of shopping malls. Most shopping malls are designed with special themes and boast plenty of recreational facilities for all in the family. DINING

Selangor has a wide variety of local and international fare to tempt all tastebuds. Major towns such as Petaling Jaya, Sunway and Subang offer a mix of restaurants and stalls that dish out international local and international fare. Shopping malls are equipped with food courts that serve a variety of lip-smacking fare from the Malay, Chinese, Indian kitchens and other regional specialties. An array of fusion food and international fare is also easily available in major hotels. Don’t miss a chance to try out the local fare.

Satay

Visitors should not miss Satay – skewers of meat grilled over charcoal fire. The township of Kajang is reputed to have the best satay in the country. Flavours range from chicken, beef and mutton to more exotic choices such as rabbit satay.

Tapioca and Banana Chips

Selangor is known for its cottage industries that produce a variety of snacks such as banana chips, tapioca chips and traditional cakes. These salted or sweetened chips taste great and last for a long time if they are stored in air tight containers.

Indian Food

Connoisseurs of Indian food will find vast array of Indian delights at the town of Klang. Enjoy staples such as rice and Roti Canai or try out tea time snacks such as vadai.

Seafood

Seafood lovers can head to coastal areas such as Carey Island, Bagan Lalang, Morib, Pulau Ketam, Banting and Sekinchan for fresh seafood.

TRANSPORTATION

Travelling to Selangor is convenient as it is easily accessible from all major cities and all parts of the country.

By Air

There are three airports in the state. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is the main gateway into Selangor and the country. The national carrier, Malaysia Airlines and Malindo Air operates from here. The budget carrier AirAsia operates from KLIA2, which is situated about 1.5km away from the Main Terminal Building. Malaysia Airlines’ subsidiary, Firefly, operates from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang.

By Sea

The nation’s largest port, Port Klang, offers ultra-modern facilities. The exclusive Boustead Cruise Terminal welcomes passengers arriving via the Star Cruises luxury liner. Passengers from Indonesia arrive at the Passenger Cruise Terminal (PCT), situated at South Point.

By Rail (ETS)

Visitors from Thailand and Singapore can make use of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu or KTM Railway services.

By Road

An excellent network of roads provides easy access to any destination within the state. Selangor is also linked to Singapore, Thailand and all parts of Peninsular Malaysia via a system of tolled highways.

Getting Around

Taxis, trains and buses are the main modes of transportation within the state. The KTM Komuter train service offers hasslefree accessibility to most parts of the state, including towns such as Klang, Port Klang, Bangi, Kuala Kubu Bharu and Tanjung Malim. Selangor is linked to Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (other destinations in the central region) by trains and buses. Car rental and e-hailing services are easily available.
